Shazir Mucklai, Founder and CEO of Imperium AI, Shares His Thoughts on Jordan Belfort’s “Sell Me This Pen”

“Sell me this pen.”

It sounds like one of the simplest sales questions imaginable.

But to Shazir Mucklai, Founder and CEO of Imperium AI, the famous Jordan Belfort exercise represents something much bigger than selling a pen.

It is about understanding people.

A weak salesperson immediately starts describing the product.

“This pen writes smoothly.”

“It looks great.”

“It’s reliable.”

But the deeper lesson is that people rarely buy simply because somebody gives them a list of features.

They buy because something becomes relevant to what they want, need, fear, desire or are trying to accomplish.

“The pen is almost irrelevant,” Mucklai says. “The real question is whether you understand the person sitting across from you well enough to understand why they would want it.”

That distinction applies far beyond traditional sales.

Every entrepreneur is selling something.

A founder is selling investors on a vision.

A company is selling customers on a solution.

A filmmaker is selling an audience on a story.

A creator is selling someone on giving them another 30 seconds of attention.

And every person communicating online is competing, in some form, for attention.

That idea connects directly with how Mucklai thinks about Imperium AI.

Imperium AI is being built as a social network designed to help businesses, entrepreneurs and creators tell their stories, build visibility and potentially get featured in the news.

Because having something valuable to offer is only part of the equation.

People also have to know that you exist.

“The world is filled with incredible businesses and incredibly talented people that nobody has heard of yet,” Mucklai says. “Sometimes the difference isn’t the quality of what they’re building. It’s their ability to communicate the value of it and get their story in front of the right audience.”

That is why the “sell me this pen” exercise remains so memorable.

It forces you to stop thinking about yourself.

Stop thinking about your pitch.

Stop thinking about the features you want to talk about.

And start thinking about the person on the other side of the conversation.

What do they actually need?

What matters to them?

What problem are they trying to solve?

The best selling, branding and storytelling begins there.

And in an era where millions of businesses and creators are competing for attention every day, Mucklai believes that principle is becoming even more important.

The future of communication will not belong solely to whoever talks the loudest.

It will belong to the people and platforms that understand audiences best—and can connect the right story with the right person at the right moment.

For Shazir Mucklai and Imperium AI, that is the real lesson behind Jordan Belfort’s famous challenge:

Don’t sell the pen. Understand why someone would want to pick it up.
